Focusrite · Pro · USB · 2019 on
The 18i20 is the biggest Scarlett, and the 3rd Gen from 2019 is a 1U rack box with eight mic preamps. Two combo inputs on the front take guitars too, and six more sit on the back beside ten balanced line outputs. Optical ports add eight ADAT channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, and the 3rd Gen's Dual ADAT mode keeps all eight at 88.2 or 96 kHz. Focusrite also gave this generation a built-in talkback mic and an Alt button for a second pair of speakers, with Dim and Mute on the front panel. Power comes from an internal supply on a standard mains cable. It suits a home studio that records a drummer or a full band, or anyone who plans to add an ADAT preamp later. Hunt for one with its rack ears.
In the photos
It's a 1U rack box with two combo inputs, eight gain knobs, a built-in talkback mic with a Talkback button, Alt, Dim and Mute buttons and two headphone jacks on the front. Focusrite says talkback and Alt were new on the 3rd Gen 18i20, so an older one has neither. The back has USB-C and an IEC mains socket, while the 4th Gen 18i20 runs on an external 30 W supply.
Mac and Windows
Focusrite says 3rd Gen Scarletts are class compliant on macOS, so a Mac needs no driver. Install Focusrite Control (3.27 is current) on Windows for the driver, and on either platform for routing, mixes, talkback and the digital I/O modes. Focusrite Control 2 also lists the 3rd Gen range, supporting Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11 and macOS 14 Sonoma onward.
Power, cables and licences
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
The ADAT and optical ports switch off at 176.4 and 192 kHz, which is by design and catches out some buyers. As a rack unit, check that the ears and screws come with it and look over the rear sockets for damage.

Buying guide
We'd buy the 18i20 titled tested with its power cord at $390 with free shipping from a 100% seller, under the band. There are at least 17 for sale and most ask $400–600 delivered, Focusrite's own refurb asks $408, and new boxed ones ask $593–810 with big shipping from overseas. Unlike the smaller Scarletts it has a built-in supply with an IEC mains socket, so any standard IEC cable for your country works, and the rack ears come in the box, so look for them in the photos. Check the front for the talkback mic and the Alt button, which only the 3rd Gen has, and know that the optical ports switch off at 176.4 and 192 kHz by design. Skip the $600 open-box one from a zero-feedback account whose photo another zero-feedback seller also uses.
