Brand
Focusrite started in 1985, when Rupert Neve set it up, and one of its first jobs was extending the custom Neve consoles at George Martin's AIR Studios. That company was wound up in 1989, and Phil Dudderidge, a co-founder of Soundcraft, bought its assets and formed Focusrite Audio Engineering. The name stayed in pro studios, but the Scarlett is what put it on home recordists' desks. Focusrite dates the first Scarlett 2i2 to 2012, with new generations in 2016, 2019 and 2023, and each one changed details you can see in listing photos, from the USB socket to the knobs and buttons. That's why the generation matters more than the model name when you buy used. Focusrite has traded on London's AIM market since 2014, and the group now also owns Novation, ADAM Audio, Sequential, Oberheim and Martin Audio. Old Scarletts age well on drivers, too. Even a 1st Gen 2i2 still has a current Windows 10 and 11 driver and needs none on a Mac.
