Focusrite launched the 2nd Gen Scarletts in 2016, and its user guide lists what changed. Sample rates went up to 192 kHz, the mic preamps got quieter with more gain, and the instrument input got extra headroom for loud guitar. On the Solo, the mic preamp now has a 50 dB gain range, and Focusrite calls it class compliant on the Mac, so it works without a driver. The rest is the same idea as before. One XLR for a mic, one jack for guitar or a keyboard, a headphone socket and RCA outputs on the back. Those RCA outputs are the thing to know. They're unbalanced, which is fine for computer speakers and hi-fi, while a 3rd Gen suits studio monitors better. For a cheap first interface on a Mac or a Windows 10 or 11 PC, it does the job.

How to tell it apart
It has the same layout as the 1st Gen, with a Type-B USB socket and RCA outputs on the back. Focusrite's tells for a 2nd Gen are a matte front, a silver Focusrite logo and a silver metal monitor knob, with serial numbers starting V or W. USB-C or 1/4-inch outputs on the back mean a 3rd Gen or later.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Focusrite calls the 2nd Gen class compliant on Mac, so macOS needs no driver. On Windows, the current Focusrite driver (4.150.0) supports Windows 10 and 11, with the older 4.65.5 kept for Windows 7 and 8. Focusrite Control 2 only covers the bigger 2nd Gen models, so the Solo has no mixer app and doesn't need one.
A USB A-to-B cable. Any standard printer-style USB cable works.
No power supply. It runs on USB bus power.
The bundle code for Pro Tools | First, Ableton Live Lite, the Red 2 and Red 3 plug-ins and a LoopMasters library was printed inside the box and is claimed by the first account to register it, so treat a used one as hardware only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
Focusrite notes the outputs have no anti-thump circuit, so turn your speakers on last to avoid a pop. Beyond that, the wear points on a used one are the gain knobs and the USB and headphone sockets.
01Generation: Check the photos for a silver Focusrite logo, a silver metal monitor knob and a Type-B USB socket. That combination is a 2nd Gen.
02Serial number: Ask for a photo of the serial number label. It should start with V or W.
03Gain knobs: Ask for a short video turning each gain knob end to end with a signal in. It should be quiet, with no crackle or dropouts.
04Phantom power: Ask the seller to try a condenser mic with 48V on. The 48V light should come on and the mic should work.
05Outputs: On arrival, play music through the RCA outputs and the headphones. Both sides should be clean, with no hum.
06USB socket: Look at the rear USB socket in the photos and ask if the cable sits firmly. It should connect first time with no wiggling.
07Software: Ask whether the bundle code was used. Assume it was, and pay for the hardware alone.
We'd buy the 2nd Gen Solo titled tested with its cable at $70 delivered from a pawn shop with 99.7% feedback. There are at least 63 for sale and most ask $70–110 delivered, so a tested unit at the bottom of the band isn't hard to find. Check the photos for a silver Focusrite logo, a silver metal monitor knob and a square Type-B USB socket next to RCA outputs, and ask for the serial label, which should start with V or W. Focusrite calls it class compliant on the Mac and keeps a current driver for Windows 10 and 11, but the RCA outputs are unbalanced, so pick a 3rd Gen for studio monitors, and expect the bundle code to have gone with the first owner. Skip copies of the title "Focusrite 2nd Generation Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface" from zero-feedback accounts, and the $225 Studio pack, about three times a tested bare Solo for a mic and headphones.
