The 3rd Gen arrived in 2019 and fixed the two things that held the older Solos back. It has balanced 1/4-inch outputs, so it plugs straight into studio monitors, and a USB-C socket. Focusrite also raised the gain range to 56 dB and gave the mic input Air, a switch that models the top-end lift of its transformer-based ISA preamps. The gain rings now turn amber just before clipping, which helps when you're setting levels on your own. It still has one XLR and one jack for guitar or a keyboard, and it still runs off USB power. For a singer-songwriter or podcaster, this is the Solo to hunt. The 4th Gen that replaced it in 2023 adds a second Air mode and a little more gain.

How to tell it apart
Focusrite describes the 3rd Gen front as shiny, with a silver logo and black knobs, and its serial numbers start D8, F8, F9, P5, P7, P9, Y7 or Y8. Look for an Air button next to the mic gain knob, then a USB-C socket and two 1/4-inch outputs on the back. Older Solos have a Type-B socket and RCA outputs.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Focusrite says 3rd Gen Scarletts are class compliant on macOS, so a Mac needs no driver. On Windows you install Focusrite Control (3.27 is current), which brings the driver. Focusrite Control 2 also lists the 3rd Gen range, and it supports Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11 and macOS 14 Sonoma onward.
A USB-A to USB-C cable. Any data-capable USB-C cable will do.
No power supply. It runs on USB bus power.
Focusrite puts the bundled licence codes (Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools and plug-ins) in the account that registered the unit, so they stay with the first owner. Focusrite Control is a free download for anyone.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
A 3rd Gen that's never been set up starts in Easy Start mode, shows up as a storage drive and runs at 48 kHz at most until Focusrite Control is installed, which confuses some second owners. Holding the 48V button for five seconds takes it out of that mode. Otherwise check the gain knobs and the USB-C socket for wear.
01Generation: Check the photos for an Air button by the mic gain knob and a USB-C socket on the back. Both should be there on a 3rd Gen.
02Serial number: Ask for a photo of the serial number label. It should start with D8, F8, F9, P5, P7, P9, Y7 or Y8.
03Gain knobs: Ask for a short video turning each gain knob end to end with a signal in. It should be quiet, with no crackle or dropouts.
04Air and 48V: Ask the seller to press Air and 48V with a condenser mic plugged in. Each button should light and the mic should work.
05Outputs: On arrival, play music through the 1/4-inch outputs and the headphones. Both sides should be clean, with no hum.
06USB-C port: Ask if the USB-C cable clicks in firmly. It shouldn't drop out when the cable is touched.
07Software: Ask whether the unit is registered to the seller. Plan on downloading Focusrite Control yourself and buying any DAW you need.
We'd buy the Solo 3rd Gen titled works at $92 delivered from a 99.4% seller, just under the band. There are at least 106 for sale and most ask $95–180 delivered, while a Studio pack with the mic and headphones asks $132 here, so skip the $310 and $570 ones. Check the photos for an Air button by the mic gain knob, black knobs and a USB-C socket, and ask for the serial label, which should start with D8, F8, F9, P5, P7, P9, Y7 or Y8. One $126 listing titled Solo shows a 2i2 with two combo inputs, so price what's in the photo. A unit that shows up as a storage drive is just in Easy Start mode until Focusrite Control is installed, and the bundled Ableton and Pro Tools licences stay with the first owner.
