Focusrite · Entry · USB · 2019–2023
The 3rd Gen 2i2 arrived in 2019 and is the one most people picture when they hear Scarlett. Focusrite moved it to USB-C, raised the gain range to 56 dB and gave each input an Air button, which models the top-end lift of the company's transformer-based ISA preamps. Each input has Inst and Air buttons on the front, and the gain rings turn amber just before clipping. The rest is familiar. Two combo inputs, two balanced 1/4-inch outputs and a headphone socket, all on USB power. It works with Focusrite's newest software, so it's the safe used pick for a Mac or Windows 11 PC. It suits a singer who plays guitar, or anyone recording two mics at once. The 4th Gen adds Auto Gain and Clip Safe if you want help setting levels.
In the photos
Focusrite describes the 3rd Gen front as shiny, with a silver logo and black monitor and headphone knobs, and its serial numbers start D8, F8, F9, P5, P7, P9, Y7 or Y8. Look for an Inst and an Air button beside each gain knob and a USB-C socket on the back. A 4th Gen moves the XLR sockets to the back and adds Auto, Safe and Select buttons.
Mac and Windows
Focusrite says 3rd Gen Scarletts are class compliant on macOS, so a Mac needs no driver. On Windows you install Focusrite Control (3.27 is current), which brings the driver. Focusrite Control 2 also lists the 3rd Gen range, and it supports Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11 and macOS 14 Sonoma onward.
Power, cables and licences
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
A 3rd Gen that's never been set up starts in Easy Start mode, shows up as a storage drive and runs at 48 kHz at most until Focusrite Control is installed. Holding the 48V button for five seconds takes it out of that mode. On a used one, check the gain knobs, the front buttons and the USB-C socket for wear.
Buying your first one? How to pick a first used interface covers inputs, mic gain and drivers, and the power supply guide covers which ones need their adapter.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 3rd Gen 2i2 that Focusrite's own eBay store sells refurbished at $120 with free shipping, titled with a 3-year warranty. There are at least 95 for sale and most ask $110–180 delivered, and the cheapest one titled tested is a $105 auction with its USB cable that will climb. Check the photos for Inst and Air buttons beside each gain knob and a USB-C socket, ask for the serial label (it should start with D8, F8, F9, P5, P7, P9, Y7 or Y8), and ask for a video of both gain knobs turning end to end. Focusrite's store also has a Studio pack with a mic and headphones at $184, about $64 over the bare refurb, so skip the $347 one whose photo shows only the interface. The bundled Ableton and Pro Tools licences stay with the first owner, and a unit that shows up as a storage drive is just in Easy Start mode until Focusrite Control is installed.
