Focusrite launched the 4th Gen in 2023, and the 2i2 changed more than in any earlier step. The mic preamps now have 69 dB of gain, enough for a quiet dynamic mic, and the line outputs are rated at 120 dB dynamic range. Auto Gain sets your level for you, and Clip Safe turns the gain down if you're about to clip. Air now has two modes, a presence lift and a Harmonic Drive setting that adds saturation. The XLR sockets moved to the back, with jacks on the front for guitar or keys. It runs on Focusrite Control 2, which also has a phone app, and it gets current driver support. It suits a beginner who wants the interface to handle levels, or a vocalist with a low-output mic.

The 4th Gen moves the XLR sockets to the back and puts plain 1/4-inch jacks on the front, so a front panel with no combo XLR inputs is the giveaway. Look for a row of Select, 48V, Inst, Auto, Safe and Air buttons, and two USB-C sockets on the back, one marked 5V DC. Every earlier 2i2 has combo inputs on the front and a single USB socket.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
On a Mac it needs no driver. Focusrite Control 2 runs it on Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11, including Arm64 PCs, and on macOS 14 Sonoma, 15 Sequoia and 26 Tahoe, on Apple Silicon or Intel. Firmware updates come through Focusrite Control 2.
A USB-C to USB-A cable. A data-capable USB-C cable works too.
No power supply is needed. The rear 5V DC socket takes an optional USB-C power source if your computer can't supply enough.
Bundled software (Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+, Cubase LE and the Hitmaker Expansion) is added to the account that registers the unit, so on a used one expect those to belong to the first owner. Focusrite Control 2 is a free download.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
Focusrite says a USB icon flashing red means it isn't getting enough power, which the optional 5V DC socket or a better USB-C port fixes. Air's Harmonic Drive only works up to 96 kHz, which is by design. It's recent, so check the gain knobs and both USB-C sockets for knocks.
01Generation: Check the photos for XLR sockets on the back and Auto and Safe buttons on the front. Those are only on the 4th Gen.
02Auto Gain: Ask for a short video of Auto Gain running on a mic. The gain ring should settle and the level shouldn't clip.
03Gain knobs: Ask for a video turning both gain knobs end to end with a signal in. They should be quiet, with no crackle.
04Phantom power: Ask the seller to try a condenser mic with 48V on. The mic should work on both XLR inputs.
05USB-C ports: Look at both rear USB-C sockets in the photos. They should be straight, and the USB icon should light green when connected.
06Software: Ask whether the unit is registered to the seller. Expect the bundled DAWs and plug-ins to stay with them, and download Focusrite Control 2 yourself.
We'd buy the 4th Gen 2i2 titled tested at $158 delivered from a 99.7% seller, or Focusrite's own refurb at $180 with free shipping if you want the 3-year warranty in its title. There are at least 108 for sale and most ask $190–290 delivered, but new dealer stock sets much of that band, starting around $200, so used units titled tested at $158–160 are where the saving is. An open-box unit is up for auction at $143 delivered with 9 bids and will climb, and Focusrite's B-stock Studio pack with a mic and headphones asks $231. Check the photos for 1/4-inch jacks on the front, XLR sockets on the back and two USB-C sockets, one marked 5V DC, and ask for a video of each gain knob turning end to end. Skip the $500 Studio pack from a zero-feedback seller.
