The 4i4 is the 2i2 with room to grow, and it arrived with the rest of the 3rd Gen in 2019. Focusrite gave it two front combo inputs with the same 56 dB preamps and Air as the 2i2, then added two line inputs and four line outputs on the back, plus 5-pin MIDI in and out. Outputs 3 and 4 can feed a second pair of speakers, or send a track out to a hardware compressor and back in through the rear inputs. Inst, Air and a 10 dB Pad are switched in Focusrite Control, with LEDs on the front to show what's on. It still runs from USB power, though it wants 900 mA. It suits a producer with a synth or drum machine. There's one headphone output, so it isn't a two-person tracking box.

How to tell it apart
The front has two gain knobs, monitor and headphone knobs, a 48V button and small LEDs for Inst, Air and Pad, because on the 4i4 those are switched in Focusrite Control. The back has MIDI in and out, four line outputs, two line inputs and USB-C. Focusrite's 3rd Gen tells are a shiny front and black knobs, and a 4th Gen 4i4 has Auto Gain and Clip Safe.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Focusrite says 3rd Gen Scarletts are class compliant on macOS, so a Mac needs no driver. Install Focusrite Control (3.27 is current) on Windows for the driver, and on either platform for Inst, Air, Pad and routing. Focusrite Control 2 also lists the 3rd Gen range, supporting Windows 10 (64-bit) and 11 and macOS 14 Sonoma onward.
A USB-A to USB-C cable. Any data-capable USB-C cable will do.
No power supply. It runs on USB power, so plug it into a port that can supply 900 mA.
Focusrite puts the bundled licence codes (Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools and plug-ins) in the account that registered the unit, so they stay with the first owner. Focusrite Control is a free download for anyone.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
Until Focusrite Control is installed, a 3rd Gen in Easy Start mode runs at 48 kHz at most and its MIDI ports are disabled, which can look like a fault on a used one. It also needs 900 mA, so a weak USB 2.0 port can stop it working properly. Beyond that, check the gain knobs and rear jacks for wear.
01Generation: Check the photos for a shiny front with black knobs and a USB-C socket. MIDI sockets on the back confirm it's a 4i4.
02Gain knobs: Ask for a short video turning both gain knobs end to end with a signal in. They should be quiet, with no crackle.
03Phantom power: Ask the seller to try a condenser mic with 48V on. The mic should work on both inputs.
04Outputs: On arrival, play audio through all four line outputs and the headphones. Each should be clean, with no hum or dead side.
05MIDI: On arrival, install Focusrite Control and send MIDI from a keyboard. The MIDI light should flicker and your DAW should see the notes.
06USB power: Plug it into a USB 3 port or a powered hub. It should power up and stay connected.
07Software: Ask whether the unit is registered to the seller. Plan on downloading Focusrite Control yourself and buying any DAW you need.
We'd buy the 4i4 3rd Gen that Focusrite's own eBay store sells refurbished at $160 with free shipping, under the band. There are at least 21 for sale and most ask $180–290 delivered. A $61 auction with 22 bids sits at $69 delivered for now and will climb well past that. Check the photos for MIDI in and out, four line outputs and a USB-C socket on the back, and plug it into a port that can supply 900 mA, since a weak USB 2.0 port can stop it working properly. Until Focusrite Control is installed it runs in Easy Start mode at 48 kHz with MIDI off, which looks like a fault but isn't, and the bundled licences stay with the first owner.
