MOTU had been building audio interfaces for studios since the 1990s, and the M2 was its take on the two-input desktop box most home studios start with. It shipped in November 2019 with the M4, as a bus-powered USB-C box with two mic, line or guitar inputs, MIDI in and out, and a full-color LCD that meters every input and output. MOTU said at launch that nothing else in its class had a screen like it. The outputs use ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC technology, rated at 120 dB of dynamic range, and the mic inputs measure -129 dBu EIN. It's class compliant on a Mac and iPad, and the driver adds loopback for streaming. MOTU hasn't made a second version, so condition and what comes with it are what separate one listing from another.
In the photos
The M2 is the narrow one, 7.5 inches wide, with two gain knobs, a 48V and a MON button for each input, a color LCD meter, and monitor and phones knobs. The M4 adds an INPUT MONITOR MIX knob and a third MON button for its rear inputs 3-4, and the M6 has two headphone jacks and a DC power socket. On the back of an M2 you'll see two TRS outs, two RCA outs, MIDI in and out, the USB-C port and a power switch.
Mac and Windows
It's USB audio class compliant, so a Mac or iPad runs it with no driver. MOTU's optional M-Series installer adds lower latency and loopback channels, and the current Mac version supports macOS 12 through macOS 26 on Apple silicon and Intel, while the Windows installer supports Windows 11 (Windows on ARM since February 2026). MOTU lists the M2 as compatible with macOS Tahoe and macOS Golden Gate.
Power, cables and licences
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
We found no documented hardware fault pattern for the M2. MOTU's update notes do fix real annoyances, including occasional erroneous audio output when turning the input trims (firmware, February 2026) and latency drift and spikes on Windows (drivers, 2026). A Lightning iPad may not power it on its own, MOTU says.
Buying your first one? How to pick a first used interface covers inputs, mic gain and drivers, and the power supply guide covers which ones need their adapter.
Buying guide
We'd buy the M2 titled tested with its USB-C cable at $158 delivered from a 100% seller, about $42 under a new one. There are at least 33 for sale and most ask $190–370 delivered, but that band mixes three groups. Used US units ask $158–208, dealers like Alto Music and Adorama sell new ones for $200–214 with free shipping, and Japan imports titled tested want $407–526, about twice the new price, so skip those. MOTU has only made one version, so check the photos for two gain knobs and no INPUT MONITOR MIX knob, which would make it an M4, and ask for a video turning each gain knob with a mic plugged in while the LCD meter rises smoothly. Ask whether it's registered to the seller's MOTU account, since Performer Lite and Live Lite only move through MOTU's transfer process, and read the description before bidding on the $30 auction titled READ.
