Focusrite launched the 2nd Gen Scarletts in 2016 with sample rates up to 192 kHz, quieter mic preamps with more gain, and instrument inputs with more headroom for loud guitar. On the 2i2 that means two combo inputs with a 50 dB gain range, each with a Line/Inst switch, the same green and red LED rings round the gain knobs, and two balanced 1/4-inch outputs on the back. It still uses a Type-B USB socket. Focusrite calls it class compliant on the Mac, and it still has a current Windows 10 and 11 driver. It suits a home recordist on a budget who wants two inputs and doesn't need Air. If you'd like USB-C and a little more gain, the 3rd Gen is the next step.

How to tell it apart
Focusrite's tells for a 2nd Gen are a matte front panel, a silver Focusrite logo and silver metal monitor and headphone knobs, with serial numbers starting V or W. It still has a square USB Type-B socket on the back. A 1st Gen has a black logo and grey plastic knobs, and a 3rd Gen has a shiny front, black knobs, Air buttons and USB-C.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Focusrite calls the 2nd Gen class compliant on Mac, so macOS needs no driver. On Windows, the current Focusrite driver (4.150.0) supports Windows 10 and 11, with the older 4.65.5 kept for Windows 7 and 8. Focusrite Control 2 only covers the bigger 2nd Gen models, so the 2i2 has no mixer app and doesn't need one.
A USB A-to-B cable. Any standard printer-style USB cable works.
No power supply. It runs on USB bus power.
The bundle code for Pro Tools | First, Ableton Live Lite, the Red 2 and Red 3 plug-ins and a LoopMasters library was printed inside the box and is claimed by the first account to register it, so treat a used one as hardware only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
Focusrite notes the line outputs have no anti-thump circuit, so power your speakers on last to avoid a pop. On a used one, the wear points are the gain knobs, the Line/Inst switches and the USB and headphone sockets.
01Generation: Check the photos for a silver logo, silver metal knobs and a Type-B USB socket. That combination is a 2nd Gen.
02Serial number: Ask for a photo of the serial number label. It should start with V or W.
03Gain knobs: Ask for a short video turning both gain knobs end to end with a signal in. They should be quiet, with no crackle.
04Both inputs: Ask the seller to record a guitar into each input with Inst on. Both channels should sound the same.
05Phantom power: Ask the seller to try a condenser mic with 48V on. The mic should work on both inputs.
06Outputs: On arrival, play music through both line outputs and the headphones. Both sides should be clean, with no hum.
07Software: Ask whether the bundle code was used. Assume it was, and pay for the hardware alone.
We'd buy the 2nd Gen 2i2 titled working with its cable at $90 with free shipping from a 99.8% pawn shop, under the band and the cheapest one here whose photos match the title. There are at least 45 for sale and most ask $95–160 delivered, while a Studio pack titled tested with the box, mic and headphones asks $220. Generation is where these listings go wrong, so look for a silver Focusrite logo on top, silver metal knobs and a square Type-B socket, and ask for the serial label, which should start with V or W. Two listings here show the black logo of a 1st Gen, and one titled USB-C can't be a 2nd Gen at all. Focusrite calls it class compliant on the Mac and keeps a current Windows 10 and 11 driver, and the bundle code went with the first owner, so pay for the hardware alone.
