Focusrite dates the first Scarlett 2i2 to 2012, and it's the model that made the name. Two combo inputs on the front take a mic or a 1/4-inch jack, each with its own Line/Inst switch, and the gain knobs have the green and red LED rings every Scarlett since has kept. On the back there are two balanced 1/4-inch outputs for monitors and a Type-B USB socket. It runs at up to 24-bit/96 kHz, and the mic preamps reach +46 dB. That's plenty for condensers, guitar and keys, though a quiet dynamic vocal mic will want more. For recording two parts at once on a tight budget, it still works. If you want 192 kHz and quieter preamps, look at the 2nd and 3rd Gens.

How to tell it apart
Focusrite says a 1st Gen has a matte front panel, a black Focusrite logo and grey plastic monitor and headphone knobs, with serial numbers starting S, T or U. The back has a square USB Type-B socket. A 2nd Gen keeps the Type-B socket but has a silver logo and silver metal knobs, and a 3rd Gen has USB-C.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Focusrite now lists the 1st Gen 2i2 as class compliant on macOS, so a Mac needs no driver. On Windows, the current Focusrite driver (4.150.0) supports Windows 10 and 11, and the older 4.65.5 is kept for Windows 7 and 8. The 2i2 has no mixer app, so there's nothing else to install.
A USB A-to-B cable. Any standard printer-style USB cable works.
No power supply. It runs on USB bus power.
The software (Ableton Live Lite 9 and the Scarlett Plug-in Suite) came through the first owner's registration, so treat a used one as hardware only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
At this age, wear is the usual problem. Scratchy gain knobs, crackly Line/Inst switches and loose USB or headphone sockets are what to look for in a seller's video.
01Generation: Check the photos for a black Focusrite logo and grey plastic knobs. A silver logo means a 2nd Gen.
02Serial number: Ask for a photo of the serial number label. It should start with S, T or U.
03Gain knobs: Ask for a short video turning both gain knobs end to end with a signal in. They should be quiet, with no crackle.
04Both inputs: Ask the seller to record a guitar into each input with Inst on. Both channels should sound the same.
05Phantom power: Ask the seller to try a condenser mic with 48V on. The mic should work on both inputs.
06USB socket: Look at the rear USB socket in the photos and ask if the cable sits firmly. It should connect first time with no wiggling.
07Software: Ask whether the unit was ever registered. Expect the bundled licences to stay with the first owner.
We'd buy the 1st Gen 2i2 at $40 with free shipping from a 99% seller, far under the band, or bid on the Goodwill auction with cables, which sits at $38 delivered and will climb. There are at least 24 for sale and most ask $70–130 delivered, and a Studio pack with the CM25 mic asks $100. Check the photos for a black Focusrite logo and grey plastic knobs, ask for the serial label (it should start with S, T or U), and ask for a video turning both gain knobs and flipping the Line/Inst switches, which are the wear points at this age. Focusrite lists it as class compliant on macOS and keeps a current driver for Windows 10 and 11, and it runs on USB power, so a "No Power Supply" title means nothing is missing. Skip the $213 one titled preowned, about 2.4 times the median.
