PreSonus has made the AudioBox USB since 2008, and the USB 96 is the version most people own. Its owner's manual dates from 2017, and PreSonus calls it its best-selling interface of all time. It's a small steel box with two combo inputs for a mic or a guitar, a pair of balanced outputs for monitors, a loud headphone jack around the back, and MIDI in and out. It records at up to 24-bit/96 kHz, runs off the USB port, and a Mac sees it without a driver. You'll find it in blue or black with silver knobs, and later as an all-black 25th Anniversary edition. Any of them makes a solid first interface for a singer-songwriter or a podcaster.

How to tell it apart
The front says AUDIOBOX USB 96 in white next to the PreSonus logo, top left. Early units are blue or black with silver knobs and a red 48V button, and the later 25th Anniversary edition is all black with black knobs, the PreSonus logo moved to the top right and AUDIOBOX USB96 top left. A blue box that just says AUDIOBOX USB, with no 96, is the older model, and all versions have a square USB-B socket on the back.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
It's class compliant, so a Mac or iPad uses it without a driver, and PreSonus has listed it as supported on Apple Silicon Macs since Universal Control 3.4.2 in March 2021. On Windows you install Fender Universal Control (the renamed PreSonus Universal Control), whose 5.1 release supports Windows 10 22H2, Windows 11 24H2 and macOS 13.7.8 or later. PreSonus's macOS 27 compatibility page (October 2026) lists every colour of the AudioBox USB 96 and the 25th Anniversary edition as supported.
The 6-foot (1.8 m) USB A-to-B cable. Any standard USB-B printer-style cable works.
No power supply. It runs from the USB port.
Software is tied to the first registration. Units registered new today get Fender Studio (the 25th Anniversary edition gets a 6-month Fender Studio Pro trial), and older units shipped with Studio One Artist. Fender's transfer page says software that came free with hardware can't be transferred, so assume a used one comes without a DAW licence.
Studio bundles add an M7 condenser mic and HD7 headphones, which are worth having if they're included.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
PreSonus's support notes say hiss with the gain at or near full is normal for this bus-powered box, and that low-output mics can force you to turn it right up. We didn't find a documented model-specific failure, so test the basics: both inputs, the headphone jack and the USB socket.
01Version: Check the front panel in the photos for USB 96. A plain AudioBox USB is the older model.
02Both inputs: Ask for a short video recording a mic or guitar into input 1, then input 2. Both should sound clean, with the Clip LED only on loud peaks.
03Gain knobs: Ask the seller to turn each gain knob end to end while recording. It should stay quiet, with no crackle or dropouts.
04Phantom power: If you use a condenser mic, ask the seller to test one with 48V on. The red button should light and the mic should work on both inputs.
05Headphones and outputs: Ask whether the rear headphone jack and both main outputs were tested. Good is sound on both sides with no crackle when the plug moves.
06USB socket: Look at the square USB-B socket in the photos and ask if it's loose. The cable should seat firmly and the Power LED should stay lit.
We'd buy the AudioBox USB 96 titled tested with its cable at $56 delivered from a 99.6% seller, right at the $57 median. There are at least 194 for sale and most ask $50–75 delivered, in blue, black or the all-black 25th Anniversary edition, and the cheapest working one here asks $38. Check the front in the photos for USB 96, since a blue box that just says AUDIOBOX USB is the older model, and ask for a short video recording into each input with the gain knobs turned end to end. Any Studio One licence belonged to the first owner, and Fender says software that came free with hardware can't be transferred, so don't pay extra for it. Skip the Studio bundle from Canada, which asks $175 delivered with $87 of shipping, and sellers under 98% feedback.
