Universal Audio released the Apollo Twin X in October 2019, putting the converters from its new Apollo X rack interfaces into the Twin's familiar desktop box. It came as a Duo or Quad, now with Thunderbolt 3, and kept the MkII's two Unison preamps, front Hi-Z input, talkback mic and monitor controls. On paper the jump is clear, with UA's spec for mic-input dynamic range going from 118 dB on the MkII to 123 dB. In October 2024 UA launched Gen 2 in a grey case, with better digital-to-analog conversion and Auto-Gain in the Console app, and both generations can use the Sonarworks monitor correction UA added. For most people the black first-generation Duo is the one to hunt. It plugs straight into a modern Mac or Thunderbolt PC, no adapter needed.

How to tell it apart
The Twin X has a USB-C-shaped Thunderbolt 3 port on the back, where the Twin MkII's Thunderbolt 2 port is the smaller Mini DisplayPort shape. The first Twin X (2019) is black, and the Gen 2 from October 2024 has a pale grey case. A Twin X USB has a USB port instead. Duo and Quad look the same, so ask for a UAD Meter & Control Panel screenshot showing two DSPs.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Current UAD software supports it on macOS 11 Big Sur through 26 Tahoe, Apple silicon included (with Reduced Security and kernel extensions allowed), and on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with a Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 port. UA says AMD PCs are untested and that a first-generation Twin X needs UAD v10.0 or later, warning that earlier software can damage it. A Gen 2 needs v11.5.0 or later.
The original UA power supply, rated 12 V DC, 4.2 A, centre positive, with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm barrel that twists to lock and an IEC C7 mains lead. A Twin MkII supply is only 1.5 A, so it isn't a substitute.
No Thunderbolt cable came in the box new. You need a real Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable, because a plain USB-C cable won't work.
Register it as used and UA adds its starter set of legacy plug-ins to your account (1176LN, 1176SE, LA-2A, Pultec EQP-1A and Pultec-Pro, UA 610-B, Marshall Plexi Classic, Ampeg SVT-VR Classic, RealVerb Pro and more).
Bundles sold with a new Gen 2 (Essentials+ or Studio+ Edition) and the seller's purchased plug-ins come only if the seller submits UA's transfer form with plug-ins included.
UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
UA warns that UAD software older than v10.0 can damage a first-generation Twin X, so install current software before anything else. The locking power plug must be twisted home or the unit can lose power, and UA notes its supplies can whine when the Apollo is off, which is normal.
01Generation: Check the case colour and the rear port in the photos. Black with a USB-C-shaped Thunderbolt 3 port is a Gen 1 Twin X, and grey is a Gen 2.
02Model and DSP: Ask for a screenshot of UAD Meter & Control Panel with the unit connected. It should name the Twin X and show two DSPs.
03Power supply: Look for the UA supply in the photos and read its label. It should say 12 V DC, 4.2 A, centre positive.
04Gain and phantom: Ask for a short video turning the gain on both inputs and switching 48 V on. Levels should move smoothly with no crackle, and a condenser mic should work.
05Licence transfer: Ask whether the seller is including their plug-ins and to submit UA's transfer form if so. Without it you still get UA's starter bundle.
06Software first: On arrival, install the current UAD software from UA Connect before you connect it. The UAD Meter should then show Status OK after any firmware update.
We'd buy the black first-generation Twin X titled with its power supply at $814 delivered from a 100% seller, right at the $818 median. There are at least 83 for sale and most ask $750–1,025 delivered, with used US units from $638, Japan imports at $939–1,192 delivered, and new ones on the search page asking a median near $1,199. Gen 1 is black and the 2024 Gen 2 is pale grey, and the rear photo should show a USB-C-shaped Thunderbolt 3 port, so skip the two listings whose photos show an earlier Twin under a Twin X title. It needs UA's 12 V, 4.2 A locking supply (a 1.5 A Twin MkII supply won't do) and a real Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable, so pick one with them or budget for both. Heritage, Essentials+ or Studio+ plug-ins on a used unit move only through UA's transfer form, and UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
