Universal Audio · Prosumer · Thunderbolt · 2017–c.2019
Universal Audio called the Twin MkII a ground-up redesign of the original 2013 Apollo Twin, and it reached stores in January 2017. The converters were new, and Sound On Sound measured modest but real gains, such as 3 dB more dynamic range on line outputs 3 and 4. The bigger change is on top, where a built-in talkback mic and a second layer of button functions give you mute, dim, mono and alt speaker switching, so it can sit on a desk as the monitor controller for a rack of Apollos. The Duo, with two DSP chips, was the middle option between Solo and Quad. The Twin X replaced it in October 2019. It runs on today's Macs and UAD software, as long as you budget for Apple's Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and the Duo has enough DSP for tracking through Unison preamps.
In the photos
The MkII is black, where the first Apollo Twin was silver, and it has a small talkback-mic dimple on top with a second row of monitor symbols above the six buttons. Its rear Thunderbolt 2 port is the small Mini DisplayPort shape. A USB-C-shaped port means a Twin X, and a USB Type-B socket means a Twin USB. Solo, Duo and Quad share one chassis, so ask for a screenshot of UAD Meter & Control Panel naming the unit.
Mac and Windows
Current UAD software supports it on macOS 11 Big Sur through 26 Tahoe, Apple silicon included, and on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. A Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 Mac needs Apple's Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, and Apple silicon Macs need Reduced Security with kernel extensions allowed. On Windows UA wants a Thunderbolt 3 port and a qualified adapter, and says Thunderbolt 2 devices don't work on Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 4 or 5, even with adapters.
Power, cables and licences
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
Most problems are connection ones. It's a Thunderbolt 2 unit, so modern Macs need Apple's adapter and Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 4 or 5 can't use it at all. UA also notes the locking power plug must be twisted home, and that its supplies can whine when the Apollo is off, which is normal.
Buying your first one? How to pick a first used interface covers inputs, mic gain and drivers, and the power supply guide covers which ones need their adapter.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Twin MkII Duo titled tested working at $504 delivered from a 99.4% Japan seller, just under the $508 median. There are at least 38 for sale and most ask $440–625 delivered, and the cheapest complete one is a no-bid auction at $338 that comes with the power supply, a cable and Apple's adapter. It's a Thunderbolt 2 unit, so a Mac with USB-C Thunderbolt ports needs Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, and UA says it won't work on Windows PCs with Thunderbolt 4 or 5, even with adapters. Pick one with UA's 12 V, 1.5 A locking supply or budget for the matching one, and ask for a UAD Meter & Control Panel screenshot showing two DSPs, since Solo, Duo and Quad share one black case with a talkback dimple on top. Plug-ins move only if the seller does UA's transfer, UA's warranty covers the original owner only, and the Japan listing at $1,077 delivered asks about twice the median.

The only listing here titled with the power supply, a cable and Apple's Thunderbolt adapter, and the lowest at $338 delivered with no bids yet, so it will climb. That's everything a modern Mac needs, though it isn't titled tested.
