Universal Audio announced the Apollo Twin USB in September 2015 and shipped it that October. It was the first Apollo for Windows PCs without Thunderbolt, running over USB 3 with UAD-2 Duo processing built in. You get the original Twin's layout, with two Unison mic preamps, a front Hi-Z input, monitor and line outputs and an optical input for eight more channels from an ADAT preamp. It never had a Mac driver, and UA only sold it as a Duo. The Twin X USB followed in 2023 with newer converters, but the Twin USB is still supported by current UAD software on Windows 10 and 11. Want two good preamps and Unison on a PC with no Thunderbolt port? It's the older, simpler way in. Hunt one with its power supply.

How to tell it apart
Look at the rear photo first. The Twin USB has a squarish USB 3 Type-B socket where the Thunderbolt Twins have a Thunderbolt port, and UA only sold it as a Duo. It has no talkback mic, so there's no small dimple on top and no second row of monitor symbols above the buttons, which the Twin MkII added.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
UA lists it as Windows only, needing 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a USB 3 or USB 4 port, and it isn't compatible with macOS or Windows on ARM. It launched for Windows 7 and 8.1, which current UAD software no longer supports, and it needs UAD v8.5.2 or later. UA recommends an Intel USB host controller and warns some earlier AMD AM4 USB controllers have limited compatibility.
The original UA power supply, rated 12 V DC, 1.5 A, centre positive, with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm barrel that twists to lock and changeable AC blades.
The USB 3 SuperSpeed cable it shipped with, or any USB 3 Type-B cable of 2 m or less. A USB 2 printer cable won't do.
Register it as used and UA adds its starter set of legacy plug-ins to your account (1176LN, 1176SE, LA-2A, Pultec EQP-1A and Pultec-Pro, UA 610-B, Marshall Plexi Classic, Ampeg SVT-VR Classic, RealVerb Pro and more).
The seller's own UAD plug-ins come with it only if they submit UA's transfer form with plug-ins included, and then it's their whole library or nothing.
UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
UA's known issues for the Twin USB are the unit not being recognised when it and the PC start at the same moment (power it on again after Windows boots) and DAWs going unresponsive at buffers of 2048 or more. The locking power plug must be twisted home or the unit can lose power.
01Your computer: Check you're on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with a USB 3 port. It won't run on a Mac.
02Model check: Ask for a photo of the rear panel. A USB 3 Type-B socket means Twin USB, and a Thunderbolt port means it's another Twin.
03Power supply: Look for the UA supply in the photos and read its label. It should say 12 V DC, 1.5 A, centre positive.
04Gain and phantom: Ask for a short video turning the gain on both inputs and switching 48 V on. Levels should move smoothly with no crackle, and a condenser mic should work.
05Outputs: Ask the seller to play audio through the monitor outputs and headphones. Both should be clean in both channels.
06Licence transfer: Ask whether the seller is including their plug-ins and to submit UA's transfer form if so. Without it you still get UA's starter bundle.
07Firmware: On arrival, install current UAD software and accept the firmware update if prompted. UAD Meter & Control Panel should then show Status OK.
We'd buy the Heritage Edition shown in its box at $550 delivered from a 99.6% seller, at the bottom of the band. There are at least 16 for sale and most ask $550–825 delivered, but many come from zero-feedback accounts, so skip those and pay only through eBay checkout. It's Windows only, needing 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and a USB 3 port, with no Mac driver at all, and the rear photo should show a squarish USB 3 Type-B socket where Thunderbolt Twins have a Thunderbolt port. It needs UA's 12 V, 1.5 A locking supply, and none of these titles name it, so pick one with it in the photos or budget for the matching one. Heritage Edition plug-ins and the seller's UAD library move only through UA's transfer form, and UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
