The x6 arrived in September 2018 as the smallest of the new Apollo X rack interfaces, which UA called the biggest leap in Apollo's history. All of them brought new converters, Thunderbolt 3 and Hexa DSP, six chips where the older racks topped out at four. UA pitched the x6 at electronic producers and post studios, so it's light on preamps and heavy on line I/O. You get two Unison mic preamps, six line inputs and outputs, two front Hi-Z inputs, two headphone outputs, dual ADAT, S/PDIF and word clock. UA listed 5.1 surround monitoring for it too. In October 2024 UA launched a grey Gen 2 with better conversion, still with six DSP chips. If you record synths and drum machines more than microphones, the black Gen 1 x6 is a lot of Apollo in one rack space.

How to tell it apart
It's a 1U rack unit with two Hi-Z inputs and two headphone jacks on the front. The rear photo settles x6 against x8, because the x6 has two XLR mic inputs and six line inputs where the x8 has four and eight. Gen 1 (2018) has a black front panel and Gen 2 (2024) a pale grey one.
Mac and Windows
Drivers and support
Current UAD software supports it on macOS 11 Big Sur through 26 Tahoe, Apple silicon included (with Reduced Security and kernel extensions allowed), and on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with a Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 port. UA says AMD PCs are untested. Gen 1 needs UAD v9.6.1 or later and Gen 2 needs v11.5.0 or later.
The original external power supply, which plugs in with a 4-pin locking XLR connector, plus its IEC mains lead. UA tells you to use only the factory supply.
The four rack screws it shipped with. The rack ears are part of the chassis.
No Thunderbolt cable came in the box new. You need a real Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable.
Register it as used and UA adds its larger starter set to your account, which adds the Fairchild 670 Legacy and Precision Enhancer Hz to the 1176, LA-2A, Pultec, UA 610-B and amp titles.
Bundles sold with a new unit and the seller's purchased plug-ins come only if the seller submits UA's transfer form with plug-ins included. UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing power supply or a licence that won’t transfer should come off the price.
What to check
UA's manual says to switch the x6 off before connecting or disconnecting its supply, and to use only the factory supply on its locking XLR plug. On Windows, UA's Thunderbolt guide has you disable Thunderbolt power management and review BIOS settings, so do that before blaming the unit for dropouts.
01Model check: Ask for a photo of the rear panel. Two XLR mic inputs and six line inputs mean an x6.
02Power supply: Check the photos for the UA supply with its 4-pin locking XLR plug. A listing without it is missing the one part you can't improvise.
03Gain and phantom: Ask for a short video turning the preamp knob on both mic inputs and switching 48 V on each. Levels should move smoothly with no crackle.
04Headphones: Ask the seller to play audio through both headphone outputs. Both should be clean in both ears.
05Licence transfer: Ask whether the seller is including their plug-ins and to submit UA's transfer form if so. Without it you still get UA's starter bundle.
06Firmware: On arrival, install current UAD software and accept the firmware update if prompted. UAD Meter & Control Panel should then show Status OK and six DSPs.
07Packing: Ask how it will be packed. Good is a double box with the front knobs padded and the supply wrapped separately.
We'd buy the black first-generation x6 at $1,575 with free shipping from a 99.8% pawn shop, since its photo shows the box and the power supply. There are at least 22 for sale and most ask $1,950–2,525 delivered, but that band is mostly new Gen 2 dealer stock at $2,060–2,799, while used Gen 1 units ask about $1,472–1,976 and a used Gen 2 asks $1,890. Gen 1 has a black front panel and Gen 2 a pale grey one, and the rear photo should show two XLR mic inputs and six line inputs, which tells an x6 from an x8. It runs only on UA's factory supply with a 4-pin locking XLR plug, so pick one that shows it or budget for the factory one, and bring a real Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable. New dealer bundles include their Essentials+, Studio+ or Analog Classics plug-ins, but on a used unit those move only through UA's transfer form, and UA's warranty covers the original owner only.
